Caltech's philosophy, and OTTCP's approach to technology transfer and corporate partnerships, is simple. It's about:
Building relationships with faculty
We strive to provide a valuable service to Caltech/JPL innovators by making the processes of technology transfer and working with industry as user-friendly as possible. Our success depends on these relationships. Our team dedicates a significant portion of its time to working with Caltech researchers, helping them protect their inventions, participate in the commercialization process, and find the best commercial partners for research. It's our goal to create an environment in which researchers feel like they are an integral part of a successful relationship, and that everyone is committed to having each invention and research project reach its full potential.
Aggressively pursuing intellectual property
Caltech consistently ranks among the top three universities in the number of patents obtained. We file more than 100 patent applications each year and have averaged more than 110 patents issued in each of the last five years. We file provisional patent applications on nearly all invention disclosures our office receives, and pursue nonprovisional patent protection on nearly half of the inventions. Decisions to pursue patent protection are made through a discussion between OTTCP and the inventors based on the commercial potential of the invention, its state of development, and other factors. Once a decision is made to go forward, we retain outside patent counsel with expertise in the relevant technical area to carry forward the nonprovisional patent application.
We pride ourselves on working at the pace of businesses, in both licensing Caltech intellectual property and in creating and sustaining relationships with industry. Each of our licensing professionals has the ability to conduct licensing negotiations from start to finish, without the typical university bureaucracy. We strive to make the process as easy as possible, providing a strong foundation for a long-term relationship between OTTCP and the industry partner.
We actively support the formation of start-up companies based on Caltech and JPL technologies. Start-ups are key to developing licensed technologies and providing myriad benefits, including job growth, economic development, and faculty retention. Our team members maintain close relationships in the entrepreneurial community, including with venture capitalists, attorneys, accountants, and other key business professionals.
